Eric Dier looks set to return to the starting line-up with Rooney dropped to the bench, and the Tottenham man will partner stand-in skipper Henderson, allowing Dele Alli to continue operating in the hole. One of Slovenia’s star men is also the subject of much debate, with Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kevin Kampl being labelled a “deserter” by his own team-mates after pulling out of the squad citing exhaustion. There are still quality names in the host’s squad though, with Ilici and Valter Birsa both having extensive experience in Serie A. England will also do well to find a way past Jan Oblak, the formidable goalkeeper at the heart of Atletico Madrid’s defence.
